Bolivia announces agricultural program without transgenic crops

La Paz, Apr 25 (Prensa Latina) Bolivia announced a new agricultural development program to ensure food security without the use of transgenic crops, after repealing a decree that allowed those technologies.

Decree 4232 signed by the de facto executive that took power in 2019 lacked technical and economic basis and neglected biosafety, stated the Minister of Rural Development and Lands Remmy Gonzales.

We will now work with technology, but with different foundations than those of that provision, which allowed the use of transgenics in corn, soybeans, wheat, sugarcane and cotton, the minister added.

Gonzales assured that he will work with the sector to make production viable, initially with the cultivation of soybeans.

We hope to achieve soon ‘not only a decree, but also a bill enabled by the Constitution, whose Article 406 establishes to legislate on the issue of transgenics,’ the minister set out.

The abrogation of the authorization in favor of those genetic technologies, approved by the de facto executive of Jeanine Añez, was unfolded on Wednesday by Bolivia’s President Luis Arce.

The decree established abbreviated procedures for corn, sugar cane, cotton, wheat and soybean, modified in their different events and allocated for commercialization inside and outside the country.
