Syria receives more than 200,000 doses of anti-Covid-19 vaccines

Damascus, Apr 23 (Prensa Latina) The Syrian Ministry of Health on Friday received 203,000 doses of vaccines to fight the SARS-CoV-2 virus from the global vaccine platform Covax launched by the World Health Organization (WHO).

This batch is part of a million shots that will arrive in Syria soon and are added to others that were sent by friendly countries such as Russia and China, Health Minister Hasan Gubash said at a press briefing.

Gubash stated that the vaccine is AstraZeneca and is manufactured in the Republic of India. He also said that this batch will complete the immunization of all health personnel, the elderly and those people suffering from chronic diseases.

The Ministry of Health recently announced that the country plans to vaccinate up to 25 percent of the population before 2021 ends.

According to data announced by the Ministry, Syria has confirmed to date 21,725 Covid-19 cases, 15,376 recoveries and 1,496 deaths.

Syria currently faces the pandemic amid a suffocating blockade and severe sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union, which prevent the import of necessary medical supplies.
