One dead, two injured in shooting at supermarket in New York

Washington, Apr 21 (Prensa Latina) One employee died and two others were injured when a gunman opened fire at a Stop & Shop store in Long Island, officials with the Nassau County Police Department said Tuesday.

The breaking news was released on Twitter by the Nassau County Police Department shortly after noon, as it indicated that a gunman dressed in black walked into a manager´s office on the upper floor of the West Hempstead Stop & Shop around 11 a.m. on Tuesday and opened fire.

The Police Department added the area was being inspected, notifying nearby schools to close and secure the buildings, and also asked local residents to stay at home, as suspect had not yet been detained.

In a news conference on the crime, Nassau Police Commissioner Patrick Ryder identified the victim as a 49-year-old man, adding that the two injured were taken to nearby hospitals.

Ryder said that investigators are tracking down Gabriel Dewitt Wilson, 30, who was or may still be an employee of Stop & Shop, and whom they believe is the gunman.

During the elapsed time of this year, over 150 shootings have been reported in the United States, according to the Armed Violence Archive.
