As announced by the United Nations spokesman, Stéphane Dujarric, the two senior officials will hold a hybrid press conference, that is, combining the face-to-face and virtual formats.
Dujarric indicated that the indicators and impacts of climate change worsened last year, as detailed in the WMO report.
The union of extreme weather with the Covid-19 pandemic represented a double blow for millions of people around the world, he stressed.
Guterres stressed on numerous occasions since the beginning of the health crisis the need not to lose sight of the consequences of climate change, which are already being felt throughout the world.
He also called for taking advantage of the pandemic recovery efforts to implement measures towards a more sustainable path and in balance with nature.
In Guterres’ opinion, the damage to people and the environment due to the alteration of the climate is immense and growing and that course must be reversed urgently; for this reason, he considered it important to develop sustainable recovery plans in the face of the Covid-19 pandemic that address climate change.
