Green co-president is a candidate for Germany’s elections

Berlin, Apr 19 (Prensa Latina) Annalena Baerbock, co-president of the German Green Party, on Monday became the candidate for federal chancellor in the September general elections.

Annalena Baerbock will be the first Green candidate for the Chancellery, she will guide us in this campaign with a view to the September 26 elections, the other party president, Robert Habeck, who also aspired to succeed Angela Merkel, said in a press briefing.

This will be the first time that the organization fights for the position of Federal Chancellor.

Baerbock, 40, is a jurist specializing in international law and a former trampoline athlete. She gained popularity with her criticism of the Government’s management in the fight against the Covid-19 pandemic and has never held a government position.

According to the polls, environmentalists could emerge as the second political force behind the Christian Democratic Union (CDU), led by Merkel, and in front of the Social Democratic Party (SPD).

The move by the Greens adds pressure to the CDU and its ally, the Bavarian Christian Social Union, in office for 16 years, which has not just decided the candidate between its leaders Armin Laschet and Markus Soder.
