On the 60th anniversary of that historic event, which determined the future of the Cuban Revolution, the diplomat highlighted, ‘it is meaningful for Latin America, the Caribbean, for the world, and that significance is due to the fact that a small country (…) could defeat the mercenaries, trained, funded and armed to the teeth by the empire itself.’

In an interview with Agencia Venezolana de Noticias, Rodriguez recalled how, in the prelude to the invasion, President Fidel Castro proclaimed the socialist nature of the revolutionary process on April 16, which was defended by the people during the combats in the coasts of the western province of Matanzas.

He highlighted unity as a decisive element to achieve the triumph over punitive actions and attacks of the United States in particular and major powers in general.

More than 1,200 mercenaries led by US Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) fought in Bay of Pigs, who tried to disembark in a small strip in central southern Cuba, who were defeated in just 72 hours.

When comparing those attacks to the present US Cuba policy, he claimed that the objective remains the same: overthrowing or destroying the Cuban Revolution.

He also said that Washington has never discarded the possibility of destroying or asserting its interests when it intends to do so. To him, this is due to the fact that ‘imperialism is opportunistic by nature, no matter whether the government in power is, Republican or Democrat.
