Grenada’s Prime Minister Keith Mitchell confirmed the aid to the neighboring country despite the fiscal challenges they face, and said that such monetary contribution is in addition to the support provided by other nations and institutions to the people of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.
Mitchell recalled that in September 2004, when Hurricane Ivan devastated his country, those same neighbors were among the first to help.
He noted, ‘being our sister’s keeper is just part of our tradition as Caribbean people.’
The La Soufriere volcano entered an explosive phase past Friday causing dangerous fast flows of broken rocks, ash and gas that in some points reached the coast and its ashes reached nearby island countries.
Scientists predict that the tremors, fumes and explosions could continue for weeks.
