Sudan’s movement calls for deployment of joint force in Darfur region

Khartoum, Apr 14 (Prensa Latina) The Sudan Liberation Movement (SLM), signatory of the peace agreement with the government in 2020, called on Wednesday for the deployment of a joint force in the western region of Darfur to ensure security.

The leader of the SLM, Mustafa Nasr-Eddin Tambur, said that the formation of the unified contingent of 12,000 soldiers, with the contribution of government troops and demobilized insurgents, was contemplated in the signed Protocol of Security Agreements.

He argued that the armed detachment is necessary for the collection of weapons in Darfur, currently held by gangs and insubordinate militias, in order to contain violence and protect civilians, the Suna News Agency reported.

On several occasions, the transitional government in Sudan has claimed that the delay in the formation of a joint force is due to logistical reasons, amid the deterioration of the current economic situation in the African country.

In light of the recent wave of violence in the state of West Darfur (West), the representative of the SLM, one of the 14 factions of the Sudan Revolutionary Front, also urged the national authorities; meanwhile, to close the borders with neighboring States such as Chad and Libya, to prevent the entry of weapons.
