Stolen radioactive source recovered in Mexico

Mexico, Apr 13 (Prensa Latina) Mexican authorities have calmed down now that the Iridium-192 radioactive source that had been stolen on Sunday on the road to the town of Teoloyucan was found, and the hazard alert was removed on Tuesday.

The source was abandoned by the thieves in Ejidos de San Francisco Ojo de Agua, and the place was cordoned off by the police in search of clues to find the perpetrators.

The theft of industrial X-ray equipment, owned by Garantia de Calidad S.A., was reported on Sunday. It is an Iridium-192 radioactive source with a 68.89-curie activity.

Due to this, an alert was issued for the Civil Protection Units of the states of Mexico, Mexico City, Hidalgo, Queretaro, Michoacan, Guerrero, Morelos, Puebla and Tlaxcala.

If the source had been extracted from its container and handled, or if someone had had direct contact with it from a few minutes to hours, it could have caused permanent or even lethal injuries.
