This was decided by representatives of the parties and election candidates at a meeting on Monday, at which the left-wing and center forces decided to defeat the right to replace the neoliberal model and establish a government for the majority, in line with the change towards a new Constitution, as a central objective.
This was the second of several meetings that they are planning to hold to strengthen that much-needed unity for the November presidential election and run for a primary election as broad as possible, from which a single candidate from the opposition bloc will emerge.
President and candidate Carlos Maldonado, from Partido Radical (Radical Party), who has promoted those meetings and is the spokesman of the group, told the press that common positions will be agreed upon at these meetings.
He said this is ‘a great step for the much-needed unity to achieve the changes that Chile needs, by devising a common objective despite our legitimate differences, which will always be less than our differences with the right.’
For his part, a member of the Political Commission of the Communist Party, Juan Andres Lagos, considered that committing to unanimously supporting the opposition candidate in case there is a runoff in the November election is very important.
