Rodrigo Delgado tried to confront what happened on Monday when hundreds of foreigners gathered in front of the Municipality to update their documents for fear of being expelled.
Over 20 of them were arrested for not having health permits to circulate, due to the Covid-19 pandemic.
The new law makes it easier for authorities to expel irregular migrants from the country. It obviously rose fears among thousands of migrants.
Speaking to the press, Delgado enlightened: there will be a regularization process for those people who entered Chile through authorized steps before March 18, 2021.
Migration Law, which replaces legislation in force since 1975, was passed on December, but then an opposition group presented a request to the Constitutional Court (TC) considering several articles the Executive regarded as basic to be unconstitutional.
