Deputy Health Minister Rakesh Gajadhar Sukul held a meeting with Cuban Ambassador to Surinam Igor Azcuy, and they reached the agreement and reassessed the medical actions in the country, according to diplomatic sources in Paramaribo.
During the meeting, the two officials described the work done as excellent and the prestige earned among patients, families and the general population by the group of 69 Cuban health professionals specialized in disaster situations and serious epidemics was acknowledged.
In recent days, local media highlighted the positive inclusion of these professionals within Suriname, despite language barriers.
As a consequence of the impact of the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, the cause of the pandemic, Cuban collaborators offered health coverage in faraway places in Suriname’s jungle and at the Wanica Hospital.
Since 1979, Suriname has had diplomatic relations with Cuba and the two countries have agreed on international issues and the regional agenda, in addition to supporting the resolution Cuba has been presenting at the United Nations to demands the lifting of the United States economic, commercial and financial blockade.
