According to the Ministry of Culture, after several hours firefighters put out the fire at the ruins located in the central department of Cuscatlán, on the way to the tourist and heritage enclave of Suchitoto.
Teamwork among firefighters, local residents, and site personnel prevented the fire from wreaking irreversible damage on the archaeological site that dates back to 1528.
The incident cropped up amid a wave of wildfires fueled by lack of rain, winds and land burning for agricultural purposes.
