The number of new positive cases detected in the day, 3,113, remained high, so the current number of active patients rose to 25,309.
One of its immediate consequences is an increasing number of hospitalizations of patients in intensive care units (ICU), which occupy 75 percent of the 901 beds available, and only the people infected with the SARS-CoV-2 coronavirus, which causes the disease, make up 48 percent. Meanwhile, the recent deaths of 20 people in a nursing home in the Rio Negro Department, due to a Covid-19 outbreak, made public a wave of contagion and deaths in at least 128 similar institutions.
This situation is worse in departments of the interior of the country, which do not have enough areas for intensive care units, local authorities told reporters.
So far, there have been 1,191 deaths since the outbreak of the pandemic in Uruguay a year ago.
