Russian president passes law against rehabilitation of Nazism

Moscow, Apr 6 (Prensa Latina) Russian President Vladimir Putin signed a law that strengthens sanctions against insults to World War II veterans and the rehabilitation of Nazism, it was reported in Moscow on Tuesday.

Deputies of the Russian State Duma (Lower House of Parliament) presented in February the proposals for amendments to the law on criminal liability for insulting veterans of the Great Patriotic War.

Irina Yarovaya, vice president of the State Duma, proposed classifying the public propagation of deliberately false information about the veterans of the Great Patriotic War as one of the forms of the rehabilitation of Nazism.

She explained that the initiative came from the members of the United Russia party in the State Duma, but was supported by other organizations, TASS news agency informed.

Yarovaya recalled that the amendments to the Constitution established the ‘unconditional moral value’ of the heroic actions of the Russian people in the Great Patriotic War.

The rehabilitation of Nazism, previously prohibited for officials and the media, with the new law, will also be illegal for any Russian citizen on the internet, with punishments between two million (29,000 dollars) and five million rubles (65,000 dollars), or up to five years in jail.
