Cuban president rejects US report on human rights

Havana, Apr 1 (Prensa Latina) President Miguel Diaz-Canel on Thursday described a recent accusation by the US Department of State regarding alleged violations of Human Rights in Cuba as outrageous, immoral and deceitful.

It (the United States) resort to the usual infamous rhetoric to slander a heroic country that suffers from a criminal blockade imposed by the US Government, causing great damage to the Cuban people. #CubaViva, Diaz-Canel posted on his Twitter account.

Foreign Minister Bruno Rodriguez, in turn, rejected the report and consider it ‘misleading and politicized.’ It will not tarnish the globally recognized performance of #Cuba and its indicators of social justice, respect for and protection of our population’s human rights, he tweeted.

The text drawn up by the State Department is the first one published by the Joe Biden administration, and accuses the Cuban Government of alleged restrictions on the right to peaceful assembly, as well as religious freedom, human trafficking, among other allegations.

On Wednesday, the director of the Center for International Policy of Cuba, Jose Ramon Cabañas, stated that this document is a terrible start for the cleaning exercise of the battered image left by Trump all over the planet.

On his Twitter account, Cabañas recalled that the United States is the country ‘with the largest incarcerated population, with more people killed by police brutality and with more indigenous people living in shelters.’ For 40 years, the United States Congress has enacted a law mandating the Secretary of State to prepare the document and send it to Congress annually.

Legislators use the information to design laws, pass foreign aid, and make policy decisions.
