China approves annexes on electoral reform in Hong Kong

Beijing, Mar 30 (Prensa Latina) The National People's Congress of China (Parliament) on Tuesday approved the annexes it will introduce to the Hong Kong Constitution to reform the electoral system there and strengthen the implementation of the One Country, Two Systems principle.

The legislators unanimously endorsed the modification of the methods to select the executive chief of the southern territory, conform the list of the Legislative Council and also its voting procedures.

In addition, they approved other bills related to the appointment and removal of personnel in the special administrative region.

After Tuesday’s vote at the Assembly, Chinese President Xi Jinping promulgated the adopted texts.

On March 11, the Legislature decided to proceed with the aforementioned reforms and according to local press, they are another great step to improve the political and legal mechanism in Hong Kong after a national security law was passed there in 2020.

The decision seeks to ensure that the administrative region remains in the hands of patriots and neutralize the anti-China segments.

The local Government must report Beijing every step of the process, up to the vote concludes.

Upon commenting on the issue, Hong Kong Chief Executive Carrie Lam said the reforms will not prevent political parties with different tendencies from running for local elections.
