On the occasion of the 95th anniversary of the birth of the heroine of the underground struggle and the Rebel Army, the Cuban leader announced in his profile on the social network X that he will honor “Vilma Espin and her extraordinary legacy” in the Revolution which, he said, has been led by Cuban women since 1959.

Vilma was a member of the Eastern University Student Federation (FEUO) and participated in the University demonstrations in Santiago’s streets.

Later, she fought in the clandestine struggle, under the war name of Deborah, under the orders of Frank País, especially during the November 30, 1956 uprising in Santiago de Cuba.

She joined the Rebel Army in the Sierra Maestra when her life was in extreme danger in the urban insurrection, until the revolutionary triumph of January 1, 1959.

Since 1960 she founded and presided over the Federation of Cuban Women, from where she played a relevant role in the defense of women’s rights and in the promotion of their full emancipation.
