The UN agency reported that most were displaced and took refuge in makeshift tents or damaged homes.
It underscored, “The resumption of relentless and indiscriminate shelling and a complete blockade preventing any humanitarian supply entering the Strip” caused great strain on civilians, mainly a million minors.
UNICEF pointed out that more than 15,000 children lost their lives and 34,000 were injured since the current phase of violence started on October 7, 2023.
It also explained that half a million were repeatedly displaced and deprived of their rights to basic services.
UNICEF Executive Director Catherine Russell pointed out that the ceasefire, from January 19 to March 1, “provided a desperately needed lifeline for Gaza’s children.”
Given this situation, Russell called on “all parties to the conflict to adhere to their obligations under international humanitarian law to protect children.”
