Colombia interested in implementing Cuba’s literacy program

Bogotá, March 27 (Prensa Latina) The Colombian and Cuban Ministries of Education are currently working to find opportunities to implement the Cuban literacy program "Yes, I Can", designed by specialists from the island.

This was revealed in a statement released in Havana by the Colombian Ministry, which reported on a visit by some of its officials to Havana. They had the opportunity to visit various educational institutions with the goal of replicating the strategies presented to them.

The Colombian government delegation was led by the Deputy Minister of Preschool, Basic, and Secondary Education, Gloria Carrasco, along with the Director of Quality, Solman Díaz, and the Deputy Director of Permanence, Andrea Cely.

According to the statement, the officials learned firsthand about the programs developed in Cuba to guarantee the right to education for children, adolescents, youth, and adults.

The agenda, held between March 19 and 21, focused on Cuba’s experience in early childhood care, inclusive education programs, literacy programs, comprehensive teaching with sports, physical recreation, and culture, as well as formative assessment in the official curriculum, the source noted.

Regarding early childhood, the Casitas Infantiles and Educa a Tu Hijo programs were presented.

Likewise, regarding youth and adult education, the literacy program designed on the island, whose effectiveness has been proven in more than 30 countries, was explained.

The value of the tool was highlighted by Deputy Minister Carrasco, who expressed her desire to develop similar strategies in her country. Among other agreements, the Colombian delegation made commitments with its counterpart “aimed at seeking opportunities to implement the ‘Yes, I Can’ program, providing support in formative assessment processes, and conducting short courses and internships for teacher and administrator training,” the statement detailed.
