US cuts affect globally displaced

Geneva, Mar 17 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations refugee agency (UNHCR) reported that US aid cuts will cause an increase in globally displaced persons.

The Danish Refugee Council said that some 6,7 million more people are expected to be forced into that condition by the end of next year.

Such a notification comes just as aid cuts from key donors such as the United States take effect. UNHCR said last year that the number of forcibly displaced people worldwide exceeded 117 million and warned that figure could rise.

The secretary general of the Danish Refugee Council, Charlotte Slente, pointed out that these are not just statistics. These are families forced to flee their homes, with little or nothing with them, in search of water, food and shelter.

Almost all of the world’s displacement occurs in 27 countries. The projection is based on an artificial intelligence-based model that predicts trends in these flows by analyzing more than 100 indicators when including factors such as the security, politics and economics of those countries.

US President Donald Trump is cutting billions of dollars in foreign aid programs around the world as part of a major spending overhaul by the world’s largest aid donor.
