The country’s Center for Volcanology and Geological Hazard Mitigation warned the public to avoid activities within three kilometers of the peak and eight kilometers to the southeast.

It also urged the population to avoid the rivers that originate in Semeru, as they could be affected by the growth of pyroclastic flows and lahar flooding.

Mount Semeru, also known as Mahameru, is the highest mountain on the island of Java, and is one of the most active volcanoes in Indonesia.
