Cuban Ministry of Transport to modernize vehicle fleet

Havana, Mar 14 (Prensa Latina) The Cuban Ministry of Transport (Mitrans) is applying a system so that individuals can exchange old cars for recoverable vehicles of the state sector, most of them coming from the Tourism sector, it was reported today.

Planned and put into effect together with the company Servicios Automotores SA (SASA), this measure is intended to avoid the dismantling of cars that can still be used, according to local press publications, which quote statements by Mitrans officials.

The provision, ‘part of the policy for the transfer of ownership, importation and commercialization of motor vehicles’ and ‘covered by Decree 119/2024’, will facilitate the use of functional automobiles, although with technical defects.

According to Cubadebate website and Juventud Rebelde newspaper, specialists of the Ministry consider that the objective is to ‘provide an option within the current economic possibilities’ to one of the transportation problems on the island.

They also stress that “it is not aimed at a gradual process of replacing the entire vehicle fleet, because the current possibilities of tourism and the economy are very limited.”

The idea is that the owners interested in this process can turn in their cars and, in exchange, they will be sold a more modern vehicle in national currency, which, in other ways, would be more expensive and in a different currency, said the Cabinet’s policy expert, Mario Perez Ventura.

It is expected to be a process without bureaucratic procedures, based on a digital list, according to the information, and specifies that SASA will be in charge of organizing and commercializing this new variant, for which it enabled the website sag.sasa.co.cu.

Those interested must register on the platform, “accessible only from Cuba, to receive automatic assignments according to the type of vehicle (car by car, motorcycle by motorcycle), regardless of brand or year.”

Each user will have two opportunities to accept or reject the proposal.

Upon receiving the new vehicle, he/she will pay a percentage in local currency based on the cost of the car received, explains the Cubadebate text.
