Spanish socialists reject Trump’s plans for Gaza

Madrid, Feb 10 (Prensa Latina) The Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE) on Monday rejected the idea of turning Gaza into a tourist resort and expelling the resident population there.

In an initiative registered in the Congress of Deputies as a non-law proposal, the PSOE underlined its absolute rejection of the plans launched around Gaza by US President Donald Trump.

The majority organization in the Government of Spain pointed out that the international community, headed by the European Union (EU), must focus on achieving the reconstruction of the strip, while expressing its support for the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.

It described Trump’s idea as ‘contrary to international law and to the feelings of practically the entire international community.’

In line with the position promoted by the socialist President of the Government Pedro Sánchez, the group reiterated Spain’s adherence to international law and to ‘a global, fair and lasting peace, based on the two-State solution,’ in accordance with the resolutions of the United Nations Security Council.

The PSOE also expressed its desire to ‘promote within the international community initiatives aimed at the recovery and reconstruction of the Gaza Strip, addressing its most pressing needs,’ with a leading role for the EU.

‘This is not the time for delays. The only option for the parties is a ceasefire that leads to the future governance of the Gaza Strip, which only involves being part of the Palestinian State’, stressed the PSOE.

It added that it is time for a ‘paradigm shift’ and for this conflict to be resolved through the recognition of two ‘democratic and independent’ States.

‘This is a fundamental right of the Palestinians, but also of the Israelis, which will contribute to regional stability and is the basis for dialogue with a view to future peace talks,’ the PSOE noted.
