The director of the Central Oil Drilling and Extraction Company, Engineer Marcos Pestaña Roque, confirmed to local media that the fire that occurred in the undergrowth near wells in operation could be extinguished, without harm to that industry.
It was the combustion of a small volume of degrading oil and was already extinguished by specialized forces, said the director, who added that the fire is under control and the long column of smoke is due to the fuel spilled in the area, so there is no danger for the inhabitants of the aforementioned community, near Boca de Camarioca, in the Matanzas municipality of Cárdenas.
According to the specialist, quoted by journalists from Matanzas, “the exploitation work continues without difficulties and, naturally, the combustion of crude oil generates a striking volume of black smoke.”
Pestaña assured that the firefighting personnel and the oil company “are working on the correction of the incident and with this action the threat is certified as extinguished.”
Although the residents in the settlements near the fire report that “it was more smoke than damage, fortunately,” authorities urged local people “to be disciplined and careful at this time of year, when there is more danger of forest fires,” reveal journalists Carlos Manuel Bernal and José Miguel Solís wrote on social networks.
