Russia draws up plan to face US sanctions on oil sector

Moscow, Jan 15 (Prensa Latina) Russian Presidential Spokesman Dmitry Peskov affirmed on Wednesday that his Government is drawing up a response to US sanctions on the oil sector that will take into account Moscow's interests.

“We are carefully analyzing the situation. The point is to take those measures that would minimize the consequences of these illegal actions and that would best serve the interests of our country, first of all, and our companies,” the Kremlin spokesman stressed at a press briefing.

Peskov’s remarks come in response to Friday’s announcement by the administration of outgoing US President Joe Biden on the imposition of sanctions on Gazprom Neft and Surgutneftegaz, two major Russian oil producers and exporters.

As well as more than 180 vessels, and dozens of oil traders, oil service companies, insurance companies, and energy officials.

The spokesman, in turn, warned that the European Union’s possible ban on Russian primary aluminum imports could lead to the destabilization of the world market.

Reuters reported on Tuesday that such a restriction could be part of the European Commission’s 16th package of sanctions against Russia.
