South Korean President is detained and subjected to interrogation

Seoul, Jan 15 (Prensa Latina) The ousted president, Yoon Suk Yeol, became today the first South Korean leader to be detained for questioning, 43 days after he decreed the controversial martial law in the country.

After ignoring multiple requests from authorities to appear for questioning, and following a first attempt to arrest him, investigators on Wednesday brought the constitutional head of state in on charges of insurrection.

Precisely, this is one of the few imputable charges that leave presidential immunity without effect from criminal prosecution.

The Senior Official Corruption Investigation Office (CIO) reported that it began questioning Yoon at its headquarters in Gwacheon, south of Seoul, but the detainee has refused to testify.

In a video recorded before heading to the CIO offices, Yoon lamented that the nation’s rule of law has completely collapsed, saying he decided to attend the interrogation to avoid physical confrontations between police forces and his security team.
