Instigators and leaders of coup attemp to face trial this year

Brasilia, Jan 15 (Prensa Latina) The Supreme Federal Court (STF) of Brazil is preparing the trial against instigators and mentors of the coup attempt of January 8th, 2023 at the headquarters of the Three Powers in the capital of the country, when radical followers of former President Jair Bolsonaro, dissatisfied with the result of the previous year's elections, invaded and looted the National Congress, the STF and the Planalto Palace, seat of the Executive Branch.

According to the online magazine Consultor Jurídico, the Supreme Court has so far focused on the perpetrators of the coup attempt, not on the instigators and coup attempt leaders, which is expected to change in 2025.

Ministers consulted by the publication considered that the trend is for Federal Police investigations to conclude and the Attorney General’s Office to file charges against the masterminds of the plot, which should begin to be analyzed this year.

Bolsonaro, members of his government (2019-2022), businessmen, and others, may be criminally tried in 2025.

In November 2024, one day after the bomb attack in front of the STF, Minister Luís Roberto Barroso, president of the court, stated that the investigations were close to conclusion. “It is a good time for us to conclude this complex investigation, with many witnesses. I recently spoke with Minister Alexandre de Moraes and with the director general of the Federal Police, and I think we are close to the end for this material to be delivered to the Attorney General’s Office,” Barroso said.

Two years after the event, the Supreme Court declared 898 defendants criminally responsible, 371 of them with sentences of imprisonment and 527 with alternative punishments.
