Sánchez calls from Madrid for reforms in global multilateralism

Madrid, Jan 14 (Prensa Latina) Spain today called for deep reforms in the world's multilateral system, in the face of the harassment of democracy "by hybrid attacks and misinformation."

Speaking at the VIII Conference of Spanish Ambassadors Abroad, the President of the Government, Pedro Sánchez, considered that today’s world is “more insecure, closed and anarchic.”

Sánchez also referred to the uncertainty that also affects multilateralism and stressed that it is a system in need of deep reforms, attacked on the commercial and financial level, but also on the political level.

He also commented on the symptoms of wear and tear and erosion of principles and values, such as the extension of armed conflicts and war rhetoric, the growing erosion of international law and international humanitarian law.

Regarding Spain, he stated that “we are not going to renounce our principles and values, which are those of the Constitution, such as peace, solidarity, freedom, democracy and respect for international law.”

On the other hand, he took the opportunity to speak of the “extraordinary economic moment that Spain is going through, which “today offers social peace and stability, innovation and confidence.”

He highlighted the leadership in growth in all advanced economies, with record levels of employment and the creation of 500 thousand jobs in the last year alone.

“We inspire and deserve confidence like never before,” while asking the Spanish ambassadors “to be filled with pride when they speak of the great transformation of Spain.”

In addition, he spoke of the Iberian country as the voice of coherence in a world in which the Global South denounces hypocrisy.

“We are coherent when we say the same thing everywhere in terms of human rights, climate justice or denouncing the non-compliance with international law,” added the head of the Executive.

Sánchez also defended Spain’s commitment to the European Union (EU).

“Europe is the best thing that has happened to our country in centuries of history (…), it is stronger than we think,” he said.

He addressed the EU’s relations with Latin America in this regard and highlighted the agreement with Mercosur, which he described as “an instrument to strengthen the economic security of the Union,” as well as the holding of the XXX Ibero-American Summit in Spain in 2026.
