Plan against official ceremonies in Mozambique foiled

Mozambique
Maputo, Jan 13 (Prensa Latina) The six suspects arrested for planning attacks against the inaugural ceremony of the parliament and the swearing-in of President-elect Daniel Chapo, received funds from former presidential candidate Venancio Mondlane, the police spokesman of Mozambique said today.

All are members of the Renamo party, whose genesis was the armed group of the same name that attacked with the support of apartheid South Africa the Mozambique Liberation Front (Frelimo), the main armed force against the Portuguese colonial domination, according to the official statement.

Mondlane, no relation to the anti-colonialist hero of the same surname, who returned from voluntary exile last week, qualifies as fraudulent the October elections in which he was defeated by the candidate of the Frelimo party, Daniel Chapo, and demands to be proclaimed president.

The informant specified that the six detainees, all members of the Renamo party, were arrested in the city of Marracuene (southeast), without giving further details, but urged the population to remain vigilant since “there is a lot of disinformation aimed at manipulating and fomenting chaos and conflicts in the country”.

At least two of those arrested denied being current members of Renamo, which they left due to “internal tensions” within the group.
