Puerto Rico: Storm surge forces closure of streets in Loiza

San Juan, Jan 12 (Prensa Latina) The weather has disrupted the lives of Puerto Ricans today, due to storm surges that forced the municipality of Loíza to close numerous streets in the municipality of Loíza (northeast).

Mayor Julia Nazario explained that the area affected most is the Parcelas Suárez, as a result of coastal erosion, at a time when the National Meteorological Service (SNM) extended until this Sunday the warning of flooding on the northern coasts of this Caribbean island, while the risk of sea currents was extended to tomorrow, Monday.

“If anyone in this country has any doubts about the reality of climate change and how it affects the coasts in Loíza, today nature gives us another tragic example,” said the mayor while supervising the installation of cement fences for road safety by the Emergency Management Office and the Municipal Police.

She specified that the sea has been undermining the land and it is already noticeable that it is hollow under streets 3 and 10, which receive the direct impact of the sea.

The mayor even revealed that while she was instructing a father and his son to move away from the coast, she was about to be caught by the waves, so they proceeded to assist her. “There is a power pole that is in danger and two large trees have already collapsed,” Nazario noted on her social networks when requesting assistance from the central government.

SNM Advisory Coordinator Ernesto Morales warned Puerto Rican residents and visitors to be cautious along the northern coast due to intense swells.

This serious situation has been going on for a long time, the mayor explained, since 2011, this community has felt how the sea has continued to enter and undermine the road, which was destroyed by Hurricane Maria in September 2017, so it had to be rebuilt, and after Hurricane Fiona in 2022, the same thing happened.

The risk of sea currents was expanded until Monday, as there are breaking waves of around 10 to 12 feet and occasionally higher, so the closure of coastal roads is possible.
