On January 8, 2023, under shouts of military intervention and in rejection of the assumption of power of President Luiz Inacio da Silva, radical supporters of former President Jair Bolsonaro invaded and plundered the headquarters of the National Congress, the Federal Supreme Court (STF), and the Planalto Palace, the seat of the Executive Branch.
Those arrested were charged with the crimes of violent abolition of the Democratic Rule of Law, coup d’état, armed criminal association, qualified damage, and deterioration of demolished patrimony.
In the sentences imposed so far on 310 persons, the STF established the payment of a fine of 30 million reais (about six million dollars) to be divided among all the defendants for collective damages.
Official sources informed that the Day of Remembrance will begin with a ceremony at the Planalto Palace, where Lula will present restored works of art, damaged during the 2023 anti-democratic events.
