Turkey and Qatar support Syria in electricity sector

Damascus, Jan 8 (Prensa Latina) The State Electricity Transmission and Distribution Company's director, Khaled Abu Dei, revealed that two generating ships from Turkey and Qatar will soon arrive in Syria.

According to the official, the ships will generate 800 additional megawatts, equivalent to half of what is currently generated in Syria. This will contribute to increasing the hours of electric service to citizens by approximately 50 percent. He explained that work is underway to secure transmission lines to receive electric current from where the facilities will be docked to the nearest transformer station to connect it to the national electric grid.

“We have been in contact with the Turkish, Qatari, and Jordanian authorities to ensure the supply of electricity,” revealed Abu Dei, who clarified that the power lines between Jordan and Syria need months of maintenance to be put into service. The connection line with Türkiye needs a longer period to be ready due to the many damages it has suffered.

On the other hand, the official acknowledged that the extent of damages to the power plants, converter stations, and power connection lines is enormous, and the company’s teams are working to make the network capable of transmitting energy.

Of the nine thousand megawatts generated before the war, Syria currently generates about 1,600 due to the lack of fuel and spare parts necessary for the maintenance of the power plants, a consequence of the sanctions imposed by the United States and the European Union.
