Mexican foreign secretary confirms defense of compatriots worldwide

Mexico, Jan 6 (Prensa Latina) Mexican Foreign Secretary Juan Ramón de la Fuente on Monday highlighted the importance of a foreign policy that projects national sovereignty and the defence of the compatriots' dignity worldwide.

Speaking at the 34th Meeting of Heads of Embassies and Consulates 2025, the head of Mexican diplomacy asked the country’s representatives abroad to keep this mission always in mind in every action undertaken in their daily work.

Faced with current challenges, the diplomat considered it important to have clarity on what tools they have available to be able to act, undertake initiatives, generate new alliances, prevent conflicts and resolve them when it has not been possible to avoid them.

“We fully trust this Secretariat in Law as a fundamental tool to support our fellow citizens who require it under any circumstances and to defend their rights with these tools, regardless of their immigration status,” he added.

In a context marked by threats from US President-elect Donald Trump, regarding mass deportations, De la Fuente said that these are times to deploy the best diplomacy, implemented by each of those present at the meeting and their teams.

“We want consulates with open doors, solidarity and effectiveness, capable of listening, understanding and addressing the points of view, needs, concerns and desires of our fellow countrymen,” he noted.

Our main message to them must be and must be given in the facts: they are not alone and our task and responsibility is to accompany them at all times.

The secretary of Foreign Affairs noted the importance of highlighting the contributions and work of the Mexican migrant communities in other countries.

Regarding the current situation in Mexico, he highlighted a transformation process underway that has yielded results and will continue to yield them, led by President Claudia Sheinbaum.

Our work in the world, certainly based on our constitutional principles of “foreign policy, is enriched by the perspective of Mexican humanism and an ethical and supportive sense of a government emanating from the people and committed” to them, the foreign secretary emphasized.
