Ernesto Guevera’s visit to India from June 30 to July 4, 1959 opened diplomatic ties that bore fruit with the opening of embassies in the respective capitals of the two nations.

In 2023, both peoples celebrated the 50th and 40th anniversaries of the first and second visit to India of the historic leader of the Cuban Revolution, Fidel Castro, who always professed an infinite affection for the land of Mahatma Gandhi.

The first head of the Indian mission to Havana presented his credentials in the Caribbean nation on January 12, 1960.
