China, Iran strengthen political trust and strategic cooperation

Beijing, Dec 28 (Prensa Latina) China and Iran strengthened their mutual political trust and cooperation during a meeting between their respective foreign ministers, Wang Yi and Abbas Araghchi.

The Chinese side assured that both countries have developed a solid relationship based on support and the shared pursuit of independence and national progress as comprehensive strategic partners and important members of the Global South, which has withstood the tests of changing international circumstances.

Wang stressed that the two nations should continue to support each other on issues that affect their core interests and further promote pragmatic cooperation, particularly within the framework of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization. He also stressed the need to strengthen cooperation within the BRICS group, promoting the economic growth of developing countries and defending the common interests of the Global South.

Regarding the global situation, Wang Yi stressed the need to stay the course in the face of global instability and uncertainty, and expressed his belief that multipolarity and economic globalization are irreversible trends. He also urged to continue working on the self-development of each country and to promote a fairer global governance based on genuine multilateralism and mutual respect.

For his part, Abbas Araghchi reaffirmed that the development of a comprehensive strategic relationship with China is a priority for Iran’s foreign policy. He applauded Chinese initiatives and highlighted the importance of Beijing in resolving international issues. He also ratified his adherence to the One China principle and his support for the Asian giant’s positions regarding Xinjiang, Tibet and human rights.

Both ministers agreed to work to implement the China-Iran Comprehensive Cooperation Plan, expanding collaboration in areas such as politics and diplomacy, trade, education, culture and the environment, and expressed their intention to strengthen exchanges between peoples and twinning between cities in both countries. They also agreed that the Middle East should be governed by its own people without interference from outside powers, and called for a political solution to the region’s conflicts, with a focus on the sovereignty of nations, territorial integrity and respect for cultural traditions.

The ministers also called for an immediate resolution of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, with a ceasefire and troop withdrawal, as well as the implementation of humanitarian assistance in Gaza. Regarding the Iranian nuclear deal, Wang Yi reiterated China’s stance that the issue should be resolved through political and diplomatic dialogue.
