The most recent evaluation of the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification System warned of phase five, the worst stage of its evaluation in Abu Shouk and al-Salam, two camps for displaced people in El-Fasher and two other areas in the state of South Kordofan, and the Zamzam camp in North Darfur, where months ago experts confirmed famine conditions in the displaced population.
According to predictions, the alarming levels of food insecurity could expand between December and May to five additional regions in North Darfur: Um Kadadah, Melit, al-Fashir, Tawisha, and al-Lait. It was also predicted that 17 other areas in Sudan face the same risk.
Experts estimate that more than 24.6 million people across the country, more than half the population, are currently suffering from high levels of acute food insecurity, while 8.1 million Sudanese are in emergency conditions; and at least 638,000 are in a situation of catastrophe or famine.
According to experts, the results mark an alarming escalation of hunger and malnutrition in the usual harvest season, when food availability should be greatest.
The World Food Programme warned that the harvest is not reaching everywhere due to the conflict between the Sudanese Armed Forces and the Rapid Support paramilitary forces. The agency added that hostilities limit markets and the movement of goods.
