Dominican President visits flood-affected areas in the north

Santo Domingo, Dec 24 (Prensa Latina) Dominican President, Luis Abinader, on Tuesday traveled to the northern province of Puerto Plata, to assess the damage caused by the rains and floods that affected thousands of families, and coordinate immediate solutions, official sources reported.

In his sojourn Abinader met with the main authorities, accompanied by the Minister of the Presidency, José Ignacio Paliza; the director of the Social Assistance Plan of the Presidency, Yadira Henríquez; Senator Ginette Bournigal; Governor Claritza Rochtte; as well as legislators, mayors, vice ministers and relief agencies.

At this meeting, strategies were outlined to assist affected families and enable infrastructure obstructed by landslides, in addition to providing raw and cooked food rations.

The president also instructed allocating funds for municipalities and districts to respond to the most urgent needs.

He recounted that in the last 50 days, Puerto Plata has been showered by rains amounting to a year’s worth of precipitations, which caused landslides, road blockages and other significant damage.

He reported that the necessary equipment is being mobilized to clear roads, guarantee traffic and restore normality in the affected communities.

He specified that as of December 26, government institutions will be deployed in the province to complete these works.

In addition, he reaffirmed his commitment to address historical problems in the territory, previously identified in the Government Council held months ago.

Among the priority areas he mentioned Sosúa, Cabarete and Sabaneta de Yásica, where the Government will arrive with social assistance plans, he pointed out.

Abinader indicated that right now the priority is to address basic needs until the rains subside, and then launch concrete actions.
