Devastating cyclone causes 120 deaths in Mozambique

Maputo, Dec 24 (Prensa Latina) Mozambican authorities reported today that Hurricane Chido, which devastated the north of the country on the 14th of this month, left a balance of 120 dead and more than 860 injured.

The National Institute for the Management of Risks and Natural Disasters indicated through a new updated balance that of the total deaths due to the atmospheric phenomenon, which affected the territories of Cabo Delgado, Nampula and Niassa, 110 occurred in the first demarcation, the highest number recorded.

According to the government entity, more than 688 thousand residents were affected by the meteorological event, with around 150 thousand residences and health centers destroyed after the onslaught of strong winds and floods.

The United Nations Children’s Fund earlier reported that some 90,000 Mozambican children were among the victims of the cyclone, complicating the humanitarian situation in conflict-affected areas.

For example, the population of Cabo Delgado has been suffering for seven years from the adverse effects of armed conflict, which has so far led to the displacement of more than 1.3 million people.

In recent years, Mozambique, a country in southern Africa, has frequently suffered from the consequences of climate change, with excessive rainfall in some parts and extreme drought in others.
