Indian newspaper: Removal of blockade would be a historic step

indian-newspaper-cites-significance-of-ending-us-blockade-on-cuba
New Delhi, Dec 24 (Prensa Latina) The Indian newspaper Financial Express said that if the United States removes Cuba from the list of terrorist countries and dismantles the blockade it would be a historic step towards reconciliation between the two nations.

“It is not too late for the United States to correct this error, provide relief to the Cuban people, and move towards a more just and peaceful relationship for both nations,” the newspaper said in an article titled “As Biden’s presidency draws to a close, Cuba’s fight against the US blockade continues.”

Motivated by the large march last Friday in Havana against the US blockade and the inclusion of Cuba on the list of states alleged to be sponsors of terrorism created by the United States, the newspaper highlighted the resilience and the ability of the Cuban people to resist such an economic war.

The Indian media outlet described the demonstration in Cuba as “powerful” and considered it a strong statement that the Cuban people will not bow to external pressure and that their commitment to justice and self-determination remains unwavering. “Despite the difficulties they face, Cubans continue to resist coercive measures that suffocate the economy, affect all aspects of daily life, seek to break their spirit or force them to submit,” it said.

The newspaper recalled that for his election as president, Joe Biden expressed interest in easing the harsh policies imposed by his predecessor, Donald Trump. Now, even though his term is about to end, the United States siege against Cuba remains a lasting difficulty, which has disappointed many. It also indicated that the blockade restricts access to essential goods such as food, medicine, and fuel, devastating vital sectors such as health care, agriculture and infrastructure.

Financial Express stressed that the origins of the blockade date back to 1960, when US officials, including Deputy Assistant Secretary of State Lester Mallory, recommended economic sanctions aimed at causing “economic dissatisfaction and hardship” in Cuba with the clear strategy of weakening the government by creating a crisis for its citizens. It also referred to the costs of the economic war against the Cuban people of more than $421 million each month, which adds up to trillions of dollars in losses over more than 60 years.

The Indian Daily considered one of the most controversial aspects of US policy the designation of Cuba as a state sponsor of terrorism, which has isolated Cuba from international financial systems and severely limited its ability to engage in trade or obtain the necessary resources. Cuba is a victim of terrorism by US-based groups due to the inaction of US authorities. On the contrary, Cuba plays a key role in global peace efforts, including brokering negotiations between armed groups and governments in Colombia and other parts of Latin America.
