Nicaragua leads Central America in electric service coverage

Managua, Dec 19 (Prensa Latina) Nicaragua currently boasts the widest electric coverage of Central America, with 99.57 percent, which is considered a significant and historic achievement here.

According to the Informe Pastrán bulletin, the country thus climbed from last place in 2006 in terms of electrical coverage, to become the leader in the region by surpassing Costa Rica, with 99.50 percent; Honduras (85.2); Guatemala (90) and El Salvador (99.42 percent).

The publication added that Nicaragua’s progress in terms of electrification shows how the Sandinista government, with political will, investment and strategic planning, was able to transform the reality of the country in just a few years.

The Minister of Energy and Mines, Salvador Mansell, explained that 6.89 million people have access to electricity in Nicaragua, which is the result of continuous efforts by the Sandinista Executive.

“We closed the year with 99.57 percent, one tenth above the goal we had set. And we already have a project for 2025 to reach 99.73,” said Mansell.

The official added that in terms of electricity generation, this year the country reached 65.53 percent using renewable energy sources, as opposed to 2006, when the same amount was generated with oil.

Referring to the country’s public lighting system, Mansell commented that this year they have continued to work on it, and plan to install some 18 thousand lights nationwide by 2025, which will be installed in neighborhoods, highways, avenues and recreational centers.
