Colombia’s birth rate drops by over 14 percent

Bogotá, Dec 19 (Prensa Latina) Births registered a year-on-year 14.4 percent drop in Colombia from January to October 2024, according to a report released today by the National Administrative Department of Statistics (DANE).

During the first 10 months of the year, 371,177 Colombians were born, the lowest figure in the last decade, according to the source.

The report added that June witnessed the lowest number of births, with 34,705, while August reported the highest, with more than 38,000.

On the other hand, the department pointed out that during the surveyed period, 227,641 deaths occurred, 1.6 percent more than in the same period in 2023, with a higher incidence for males.

Ischemic heart diseases were the primary cause of deaths, with 16.9 percent, followed by cerebrovascular conditions (6.2), chronic respiratory tract diseases (6.1), homicides (five) and acute respiratory infections (four).
