The newspaper El Artemiseño and the radio station CMHW, both from Cuba, Radio Chiriquí from Panama, the Chilean website El Maipo and the newspaper El Comunista, from El Salvador, cast their votes in favor of the Greco-Roman style wrestler, who was crowned champion for the fifth consecutive time in the Paris Olympic Games this summer.
Now, the five-time world and Pan American gold medalist has accumulated 53 of 62 votes cast to comfortably lead the Best of the Year category in Latin America, with five days left to end the consultation.
In the Best female athlete category, Cuban Paralympic queen Omara Durand, champion in the French capital in the 100, 200 and 400-meter races, remains in the lead, having reached 24 nominations thanks to the benefit of the two Cuban media outlets.
The sprinter and world record holder in 400 meters, Dominican Marileidy Paulino, from the Dominican Republic, is in the second place with 10 votes, now tied with Brazilian gymnast Rebeca Andrade, winner of four medals in Paris 2024 (one gold), after receiving the blessing of the Panamanian broadcaster and the Chilean website.
The latter, along with the newspaper El Comunista and the website El Salvador.com, voted for the Argentine men’s soccer team, champion of the America’s Cup, in the Best Team of the Year category.
With these votes, the Argentine team has received 30 more votes and remain in command with 10 more than the Cuban Beisbol5 team, double world champion.
The period for admission of votes will be open until next December 23, and the results will be announced a day later.
The media, in all its forms – radio, television, written press, agencies, digital portals – can send their selections to the email deportes@prensa-latina.cu.
