In the message, Maduro highlighted Francis’ daily efforts to promote the universal values of love and peace.

Also stressed his “steadfast defense of the human rights of citizens of the world, regardless of their ethnic origin, gender, social status and religion.”

On behalf of the Venezuelan people, Maduro acknowledged the Supreme Pontiff for “his support in favor of the cause of our Saint of the People, Dr. José Gregorio Hernández, whose time has come for him to ascend to the altars.”

“We ask for your protection to accompany him and fill him with wisdom. God bless you!” the president said.
