UN urges redoubled efforts to restore peace in Haiti

United Nations, Dec 16 (Prensa Latina) The United Nations Integrated Office in Haiti (BINUH) recognized the need to move towards credible elections and urged redoubled efforts to restore peace in the country

A statement released by the political mission called on the actors to “fulfill their commitments to move towards the restoration of social peace and the organization of elections for the Haitian people.” BINUH said: Efforts to improve security in the country will only generate lasting progress if accompanied by progress towards the organization of credible, participatory, and inclusive elections. He added, “In this period of great uncertainty and emergency, political stability is necessary to improve the overall situation in the country.”

The organization welcomed the continued efforts of the Eminent Persons of the Caribbean Community (CARICOM) while calling on all those involved in the transition to play their role to fully ensure its success “for this is in line with the aspirations, needs, and interests of the Haitian people,” the statement said.

Haiti, which has been mired in a dramatic spiral of violence for years, has experienced a surge in instability in recent months that has led to increased numbers of deaths and displacement.

The UN Human Rights Office counted at least four thousand deaths in 2024 alone due to gang-related violence. The instability also causes alarming rates of gender-based violence, including sexual violence used as a weapon of terror, while women and children bear a disproportionate burden of the crisis.
