State police confirmed the quadruple homicide that occurred in Valencia County when a call to emergency services revealed that teenager Diego Leyva had killed his family.
He was “extremely intoxicated” and was taken into custody, police reported after arriving at the scene early Saturday morning.
Inside the residence, the bodies of two adults and two other teenagers were found, all with gunshot wounds.
Leyva was charged with four counts of murder and admitted to a juvenile detention center in Albuquerque, while investigators try to determine the causes that motivated the crime.
With more than 390 million guns in the hands of civilians, the United States has more firearms than people, a discouraging fact that could make the problem of gun violence seem unsolvable.
