Fewer children generates population aging in Uruguay

Montevideo, Dec 16 (Prensa Latina) The drop in the average number of children per age group in Uruguay accompanies population aging, according to data that continue to emerge today from the 2023 Census. These are figures from the latest population measurement of the National Institute of Statistics (INE), which warned about the demographic trends of Uruguay.

The significant reduction in the average number of children per age group was verified in the 25 to 29-year-old age group, with less than one child per woman. Thus, it went from 1.45 in 1985 to 0.70 from 1985 to date.

There was also a notable decrease in the 30-34 age group, whose average number of children fell from 2.12 in 1985 to 1.20 last year.

The census showed “how social and demographic changes have influenced childbearing decisions, marking a new population structure for Uruguay,” according to the INE report.

According to the census, the national population totaled 3,499,451 inhabitants, four percent of whom are migrants.
