In a letter to Unesco, sent to Prensa Latina, the prominent Sri Lankan researcher said that the text presented to the 34th session of the International Program for the Development of Communication entitled Safety of Journalists and Danger of Impunity was prepared without taking into account all the facts.
“Given the increasing war tension around the world, we request that precise details about the Russian colleagues who were killed while reporting on the war in Ukraine be included in the report as an essential measure to ensure the professional dignity and safety of journalists,” he said.
He detailed that an investigation conducted detected the non-inclusion of information about murdered Russian journalists in the statistics covering the period 2022-2023 on the safety of journalists and impunity.
Jayathissa called on Unesco not to neglect its inviolable responsibility to ensure the freedom of expression of all international journalists and the right of the world’s people to know accurate facts.
