El Salvador’s Legislative Assembly ratifies treaty with Cuba

San Salvador, Dec 11 (Prensa Latina) The Legislative Assembly of El Salvador ratified on Wednesday a treaty with Cuba, meant to enforce criminal sentences in the respective countries of origin.

The accord was passed on a 56-1 voting to cooperate on the enforcement of criminal sentences for people convicted and sentenced to prison, so as to guarantee their right to adaptation and social rehabilitation, thus ensuring a better administration of justice.

The proposal was presented a few days ago to the legislature by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of El Salvador, Alexandra Hill Tinoco, pending ratification by both parliaments.

The document establishes the conditions for the transfer procedure, refusal to transfer, rights of the convicted person and enforcement of sentence.

The treatment was given a first signature on October 15 of this year by the Cuban ambassador to El Salvador, Tomás Lorenzo, and Osiris Luna, Vice Minister of Justice and Public Security and Director General of Penitentiary Centers.

The accord will enter into force on the date the ratification documents are exchanged between both parties, endowed with indefinite validity and subject to termination through diplomatic channels.
