South Korean civic groups demand President Yoon’s impeachment

Seoul, Dec 9 (Prensa Latina) South Korean civic groups held another vigil near the National Assembly to demand the removal of President Yoon Suk Yeol for his failed attempt to declare martial law last week.

The demonstration, led by the South Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), one of the country’s largest trade unions, took place at 6 p.m. local time.

The KCTU announced that it would hold the vigil at the same location every day, a continuation of the mass protests that brought thousands of people onto the streets over the weekend.

Another progressive civic group, Candlelight Action, also announced plans to hold a rally on Monday, demanding Yoon’s immediate removal and arrest.

Meanwhile, near Gwanghwamun Square in central Seoul, conservative groups will hold a separate rally to protest attempts to remove the South Korean president, and will hold daily protests until next Saturday.

Yoon’s approval rating has decreased to 17,3%, the lowest level since his inauguration in 2022, according to a survey published Monday by Realmeter.

The poll, commissioned by a local news agency, was conducted between Thursday and Friday of last week among 1,112 people over the age of 18, and has a margin of error of 3,1 percentage points, with a confidence level of 95%.
